SUBSCRIPTION_CONTRACT_TERMINATED: Shopify Fix

Root cause

Shopify marks a subscription contract as TERMINATED when the merchant explicitly calls subscriptionContractUpdate to set status: TERMINATED, when Shopify detects a violation of subscription billing policies, or when a Shopify plan downgrade removes subscription billing capabilities from the store. TERMINATED is different from CANCELLED — it cannot be reactivated.

Symptoms

How to fix it

1

Confirm the termination reason in Shopify Admin

In Shopify Admin, go to the customer's subscription contract and check the status history or termination reason field. Common termination causes: manual admin termination, Shopify billing policy violation, or store plan downgrade. The termination reason determines whether the underlying issue is fixable.

2

Cancel the corresponding Recharge subscription immediately

A TERMINATED Shopify contract means billing has permanently stopped on the Shopify side. If Recharge still shows the subscription as ACTIVE, cancel it immediately in Recharge Admin to stop any future billing attempts. Leaving Recharge active with a terminated Shopify contract will cause all future charges to fail and may result in the customer receiving products without payment.

3

Create a new subscription contract for the customer

If the customer still wants to subscribe, the only path forward is creating a completely new subscription contract. In Recharge Admin, create a new subscription for the customer. This generates a new Shopify subscription contract with a fresh status. Do not attempt to reactivate the terminated contract — TERMINATED is a permanent state in Shopify's subscription state machine.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TERMINATED and CANCELLED in Shopify subscriptions?

CANCELLED means the subscription ended through normal dunning or customer request — it can sometimes be reactivated. TERMINATED is a permanent final state set by the merchant or Shopify system. A terminated contract cannot be reactivated via API. The only path forward is creating a new subscription contract from scratch.

Will customers still be charged after their subscription contract is TERMINATED?

No. Shopify rejects all subscriptionBillingAttemptCreate calls for a TERMINATED contract. However, if Recharge is not updated to reflect the termination, Recharge may attempt charges that fail silently without creating Shopify orders. Cancel the Recharge subscription simultaneously with the Shopify contract termination.
