lost_card: Stripe Subscription Decline Fix

Root cause

The cardholder reported their card as lost, and the issuing bank has flagged it in the card network. All future charges to this card will be declined regardless of funds available. Recharge and Stripe have no way to detect this state before attempting the charge.

Cancel all queued retries immediately

lost_card declines will never succeed — the card is permanently blocked by the issuer. Every retry attempt is a wasted charge attempt that could trigger additional fraud flags. In Recharge Admin, find the subscription and halt dunning. In Stripe Dashboard, cancel any Smart Retry schedule for this invoice.

Send a payment update email with a direct link

Email the customer a direct link to update their payment method in Recharge's customer portal or your Shopify customer account page. Use a subject line like 'Your subscription payment failed — please update your card.' Include a direct link — customers who have to search for the update link abandon the flow.

Set a 7-day window before cancelling the subscription

Give the customer 7 days to update their payment method before cancelling the subscription. Send a reminder at day 3. On day 7, if no update is received, cancel the subscription in both Recharge and Shopify to eliminate the ghost subscription risk where service continues without payment.

No. Smart Retries are designed for temporary declines like insufficient_funds or network errors. lost_card is a permanent issuer block — no retry will ever succeed. Continuing to retry wastes attempts and may trigger fraud reviews on your Stripe account.

What is the ghost subscription risk with lost_card declines?

If Recharge marks the subscription ACTIVE while Shopify billing fails with lost_card, your store may continue fulfilling orders for a customer who is not paying. This is a ghost subscription — service rendered without revenue collected. Cancel both the Recharge subscription and Shopify contract simultaneously to stop fulfillment.
